Question about violin bowing? Please go inside?

For the most part, your bow stick will be slightly more tilted away from you than your hair. If you want a more focused sound (and a little louder), you would play with perfectly flat hair. Violinists almost never do that, but violists do tend to play more with flat hair. Experiment with the sound because as you get more advanced, you will be wanting to vary the amount of tilt based on what sound you are wanting to achieve. You should never let the bow stick tilt towards yourself. Often the tilt of the bow stick is a factor of what you are doing with your wrist (and thumb--it should always be bent because it is your shock absorber and therefore needs flexibility). I have found that when the wrist is below the level of the bow stick and the hand, the sound is a bit less controlled. Conversely, the wrist too far above the hand is also less controlled in a different way. If the thumb and the pinky on the bow are bent, then there should basically be one unbroken line from finger base knuckles, through the top of the hand, along the wrist, through the forearm and the elbow, as if you could lay a piece of paper on there at the G-string level and it would be perfectly flat.
